As most of you know I love competing in photographic competitions. It challenges me creatively, encourages me to continue trying new things and pushes me to be a better photographer. I just received some exciting news, I was named a Bronze Medalist!
Photographic Competition
My competition cycle starts each July in Tulsa at INPPA and extends to August the following year. With competition cycles spanning such a time frame it is a struggle to hide my images away until the International Photographic Competition (IPC) hosted by Professional Photographers of America (PPA) concludes. IPC is a chance for photographers to put their images in front of a judging panel of qualified experts to have their work judged and critiqued by the strictest of guidelines alongside the best photographers in the nation. The images are all judged anonymously over a four-day span. Each photographer may enter four photographic images for consideration. Let that sink in. Only four images to represent a year of work. Your very best four images. This year 1,301 photographers entered images.
IPC finished up the first week of August and now I can reveal my results. By all 4 images scoring as a merit image I went 4 for 4. This makes me a Bronze Medalist. Of every one that entered IPC 208 were awarded the Bronze Medal.
Bronze Medal Images
Keep it between the lines. This is an image that has been marinating in my mind for over a decade. With the approaching demolition of the bridge I decided I needed to get my rear in gear and photograph it.
Hell Bound. When a dancer with a killer costume comes to the studio to play.
When the music stops. A dancer, a vintage, never-remodeled room and a prom dress from 1974.
Cornered by Depression. A vintage room with an actor / model who really gets into character.
Official Press Release
Laurie Biby, Broken Arrow OK Photographer Named Bronze Medalist at International Photographic Competition
Laurie Biby of Beyond Ordinary Life Photography is honored by peers and jurors for high-quality photography.
Broken Arrow, OK – Laurie Biby of Beyond Ordinary Life Photography in Broken Arrow OK was named a Bronze Medalist during Professional Photographers of America’s 2018 International Photographic Competition. Biby’s work will be on display at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, Jan. 20-22, 2019. This International Photographic Exhibit is held in conjunction with Imaging USA, an annual convention and expo for professional photographers.
A panel of 32 eminent jurors from across the United States selected the top photographs from nearly 5,073 total submitted entries at Gwinnett Technical College in Georgia. Judged against a standard of excellence, 2,622 images were selected for the General Collection and 513 (roughly 10 percent) were selected for the esteemed Loan Collection—the best of the best. The Loan Collection images will all be published in the much-anticipated “Loan Collection” book and over 365 selected General Collection images will be published in the “Showcase” book by Marathon Press.
The level of the award is determined by how many of those four images receive the highest possible honor: acceptance into the PPA Loan Collection, which is displayed at photographic exhibitions, conventions and other photography events. Biby was named a Bronze Medalist by earning a merit—a mark of quality and honor—for each of the four images included in Her entry case to the International Photographic Competition. This is the most prestigious competition of its kind, where images are judged based on a standard of artistic excellence, not against each other. In 2018, She was one of only 208 Bronze Medalists.
